Blog This Sharing a Story

The other day while I was giving a presentation on WordPress and its many uses as an educational tool to a group of faculty members at a local university interested in incorporating blogging in their teaching approach, one professor expressed a great deal of displeasure with WordPress and its apparent lack of functionality. One of the most interesting involved his pointing out that Blogger offered BlogThis and WordPress did not.  Blog This enables bloggers to cite either other blogs or websites and create a blog entry from that.  In its simplest … [Read more...]

An uncategorized category in WordPress?  It's true, in a default installation, uncategorized  is provided to the unknowing blogger or site owner because Wordpress has to have at least one to complete an install.  Traditionally, when WordPress was thought of solely as a blogging platform, the uncategorized category was included to give users an example of how a blog post is created and organized.  And, as an example, it serves its purpose well.  Keyword here is "example".  When configuring a WordPress-based blog or website for a client, this is … [Read more...]

Strange Wild Things

Strange Wild Things

Every now and then we come across oddities in nature, things that really make an animal stand out, either from its surroundings or from its siblings. Obvious abnormalities include albinos, rare colour morphs, or hybrid crosses (mule deer x whitetail deer come to mind). Less obvious traits include such things as non-typical antlers, or missing or deformed appendages. Some of these observations are fairly unique, I'm sure. For example one fall I observed a doe with a knife-like spike antler about 6 inches long on one side. On another outing I observed a … [Read more...]

Migration = Gourmet Delight

Migration Equals Gourmet Delight

As first light of day turns the eastern fall sky to hues of apple green and teal blue, the sounds of geese, cranes, and ducks begin to fill the air. Quiet at first, the sounds grow louder as more and more birds chime in on the “morning chorus”. Then as if watching a count-down timer to the new year, the birds lift off with a deafening roar like a rocket launch. Wave after wave of lesser snow geese pass overhead. I can't help but think that this spectacle resembles the seemingly endless flocks of passenger pigeons described in history books. Lesser … [Read more...]

Well, I'm happily home again after spending 8 days hunting elk in the mountains.  My partner and I packed our gear and supplies on our backs in to the base camp.   My feet fared better than last year!  Still, the distance and weight led to some foot blisters that took away from my enjoyment of the hunt.  Since I now have hard-won knowledge of blisters, here are a few pointers that may help you fully enjoy your next outdoor adventure. 1) Boot fit is critical.  When purchasing boots, seek the advice of a knowledgeable salesperson to ensure proper … [Read more...]
